How Severe Is The Mold Problem?
A USA WEEKEND report ("MOLD: A Health Alert") describes how, "people with prolonged exposure to mycotoxins from Stachybotrys and other fungi experienced chronic fatigue, loss of balance, irritability, memory loss and difficulty speaking." The article also mentions several other studies that describe the extent of the problem. In one Harvard study of 10,000 homes, mold was associated with a 50 to 100% increase in respiratory symptoms. A Mayo Clinic Study indicated that nearly all of the 37 million sufferers of chronic sinus infection may be able to attribute it to mold. Other studies mentioned in the article link mold to the 300% increase in asthma over the past 20 years.
Medical Signs and symptoms
Some of the symptoms people can exhibit include ongoing itchy eyes, nose bleeds, continuing sinus problems, chronic fatigue, headaches, memory issues, running nose, and even skin rashes or sores. In addition to serious lung diseases, some studies have led to concerns about mold and hair loss, cancer, and birth defects. Not all people living or working in an environment contaminated by mold will experience symptoms, and those who do may not experience the same symptoms as those around them.
Moisture is the source.
Moisture problems have been linked to changes in construction practices during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. In response to environmental and energy concerns, the construction industry developed new materials and techniques. Some of these changes have resulted in buildings that are tightly sealed, but may lack adequate ventilation, potentially leading to moisture buildup. To be fair, it's often not the builder's fault. Delayed or insufficient maintenance on the part of homeowners is a major cause of moisture problems.
